More on the Nevin Shapiro matter:Ethics Charges Filed againstFraudster’s Bankruptcy Attorney Maria Elena Perez

Maria Elena Perez, who practices law in Coral Gables, Florida near the University of Miami was formally accused on Monday, April 14thof ethics violations by the Florida bar (we reported earlier that the Bar had been considering action against Perez who assisted the NCAA’s investigation of alleged violations at the University of Miami).

According to the Associated Press, Perez could face sanctions by the Bar including probation, suspension, disbarment and public reprimand. The decision on punishment against Perez will be made upon a review of the allegations by the Florida Supreme Court. The Florida Bar is attempting to determine if Perez received financial incentives from the NCAA during its investigation of the University of Miami.

Most Bizarre Reasons for Divorce - Much thanks to the Huffington Post?

*Woman donates kidney to husband wants it back (this statement stands on its own without explanation)…

*…on the other hand, how about the newlyweds who divorced after a heated argument over how to properly eat peas. According to Al Arabiya News a Kuwaiti woman filed for divorce just a week into her marriage after finding out that her husband would rather use bread instead of a fork to eat peas. Al Arabiya reports that the unhappy bride accused her spouse of having poor table manners and was shocked when he ate the peas with the bread.

*According to the New York Times back in 2012 an Englishman divorced his spouse because she had “maliciously and repeatedly” served him his least favorite meal. Any guesses what his least favorite meal was? Tuna casserole. Who doesn’t love a tuna casserole, aside from the tuna, of course?

Finally… Sure FireWays to Lose Clients

*Lack of communication. We have a myriad of ways to stay in touch these days, including cell phones, the Internet and email, texting, faxing and even snail mail. Nevertheless, many malpractice claims could be avoided by keeping open the lines of communication between attorneys and their clients. If you fail to return a call that the client believes is important (even if you don’t), you may be violating your ethical responsibility of communication.

*Dishonesty and Incompetence. The rules of legal ethics in most states require you to be honest and perform your job with competency.

*Inadequate amount of Legal Case Management Software Work

*Failing to fully explain to clients how you’re billing system works and why they are being billed for particular services.

*Lost Case Files. Although this is a rarity, it does happen.
